As many of you know, I'm one of many people who started playing the ukulele after being inspired by the "Concert for George" in memory of George Harrison. My interest in the uke has led to an interest in artists who play the uke. These are artists and songs that you don't see in the top 40, they are "boutique artists" who do something a bit special for an audience that wants to hear something out of the ordinary.
My current favourite is Victoria Vox (
http://www.victoriavox.com/ - but a warning, this site starts playing music as soon as you open it, which I know many of you will think is poor Web design - please be forgiving). I really loved her previous album "Chameleon", and I'm currently listening to her latest album "Exact Change". Victoria has a beautiful voice, and it isn't the kind of ukulele music that people often think of, it isn't George Formby, it isn't Hawaiian. It's just great folk music which happens to have a uke in it.
The good news for people in London is that Victoria will be playing at the Hope & Anchor (207 Upper Street Islington London N1 1RL, map:
http://maps.ovi.com/services/place/826gcpvj-725b5262e7714d94b005c977cb9c358d) on 30 May 2010. Doors open at 6:30pm, and Victoria is on at 6:35pm.
I'm really looking forwards to it, it will be great to see and hear her live. If you can get there yourself, let me know if you want to meet up.
