I had seen the George Clooney version at the cinema, and saw both in the last week as they have been on TV. I have to say, the remake makes rather more sense when you have seen the Russian original. However, the original is very long, arguably too long, so I can see why they shortened it for the remake.
That said, if you have to see only one of these, see the Russian original.
